Causes of Delayed Talking in Children

Causes of delayed talking and language disorders are very numerous and extensive, all ranging from hearing process disorder, the successor of impulses to the brain, muscle or organs of sound maker. There are three causes of delayed talking most of them are mental retardation, hearing loss and delay in maturation. Delay in maturation is often called a functional delayed talking. Another cause is the abnormalities of speech organs, genetic or chromosomal abnormalities, autism, selective mutism, receptive aphasia and environmental deprivation.

Environmental deprivation can be caused by quiet environment, social economic status, wrong teaching techniques, parental attitudes. Speech disorders in children can be caused by an organic disorder that interferes multiple body systems such as the brain, hearing and other motor functions.

Several research shows that the causes of delay in speech is dominant hemisphere disorder. These deviations usually referring to left brain. Several children also found deviations in right hemisphere, the corpus callosum and auditory trajectories that are interconnected.

Besides body organs, other things that could be the cause is environmental which get less sufficient stimulation or the use of two languages. If the cause is environmental factors, usually delayed talking that occurred was not too severe.
